【Los Angeles News】Green Card Holder Passed Naturalization Exam but Was Detained by ICE

📌 The Incident in Los Angeles

In early August 2025, a 55-year-old woman, Sharareh Moghadam, from Studio City, Los Angeles, believed she was about to attend her U.S. naturalization oath ceremony. Instead, she was unexpectedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the immigration office. The case shocked the community and raised widespread concern.

Her husband, Hoosang Aghdassi, desperately searching for his wife, plastered flyers across his shop windows. The flyer read:

“Bring her home. My wife was taken away by ICE. Our family is broken, but our love remains strong.”

According to family members, while detained in an Arizona facility, Sharareh’s health deteriorated. She was forced to discontinue insulin treatment due to adverse reactions, and her mental state declined rapidly—so severely that she even expressed suicidal thoughts. Her husband broke down in tears, saying:

“She did nothing wrong. She committed no crimes, not even a parking ticket. This is not fair.”

⚖️ Why Can This Happen?

Many people believe that once you hold a green card or even pass the naturalization exam, you will not face any further issues with ICE.
However, the reality is:

  • Background checks during immigration processes can still lead to detention
  • Procedural issues (such as application errors or unresolved old cases) may trigger ICE action
  • In certain cases, ICE may require individuals to appear in a Bond Hearing or Immigration Court

These legal processes are highly complex. A single mistake may jeopardize one’s freedom, residency, or even eligibility for citizenship.
