How to Choose the Right Lawyer

When facing a legal issue, choosing the right attorney is one of the most important decisions you can make. Many people start by asking:

“How much does the lawyer charge?”

While cost is certainly a factor, it should not be the only one.

Some attorneys charge less because they may have less experience or limited time to devote to your case. Others charge more because they have years of experience handling complex matters efficiently and strategically.

Most importantly, you should feel confident that you trust your attorney and believe they will take responsibility for your case. The factors you should consider may also vary depending on the type of legal issue involved.

1. Criminal Defense Cases

Criminal cases often affect your freedom, reputation, and future record, so choosing the right lawyer requires careful consideration.

One of the most important questions to ask is whether the attorney has actual courtroom experience. Some lawyers focus primarily on paperwork or negotiations, but criminal cases frequently require strong representation in court. Attorneys who regularly appear in court are usually more familiar with courtroom procedures, prosecutors, and defense strategy.

Communication is also critical. A strong criminal defense lawyer should clearly explain:

  • the risks involved
  • possible outcomes
  • available legal strategies

rather than making vague promises about results.

Attorney fees in criminal cases can vary significantly. Lower fees do not necessarily mean poor representation—but choosing a lawyer based only on price can be risky. What matters most is whether the attorney is willing to invest time and effort into understanding and defending your case.

2. Immigration Cases

Immigration matters often appear to involve paperwork, but many cases include complex legal issues, especially when they involve:

  • prior unlawful entry
  • criminal history
  • incomplete or incorrect information submitted to immigration authorities
  • asylum applications
  • immigration court proceedings

In these situations, the attorney’s experience becomes especially important.

It is also important to confirm whether you are working with a licensed attorney or a legitimate law firm. Many so-called “immigration consultants” or intermediaries are not attorneys and cannot represent clients in immigration court.

Fees in immigration cases depend on several factors, including case complexity, documentation requirements, and whether court appearances are necessary. A lower fee does not always mean better value. In many cases, an experienced attorney can help avoid mistakes that save time and reduce long-term risk.

3. Personal Injury Cases

In personal injury cases—such as car accidents, slip-and-fall incidents, or other injury claims—many attorneys work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they are paid only if compensation is recovered.

When choosing a personal injury attorney, many clients focus only on the percentage charged, such as 25%, 33%, or 40%. However, comparing percentages alone may overlook how much work the attorney is actually willing to invest in the case.

Different attorneys may handle cases very differently. For example:

  • whether they gather complete evidence
  • whether they carefully organize medical records and treatment documentation
  • whether they negotiate extensively with insurance companies
  • whether they are prepared to file a lawsuit and go to court if necessary

Some attorneys may accept a quick settlement from the insurance company, which resolves the case faster but may not result in the most appropriate compensation for the client.

It is also a common misconception that a higher percentage automatically means the attorney benefits more at the client’s expense. In reality, attorneys who commit more time and resources to a case may be better positioned to pursue higher compensation. Even with a higher fee percentage, the client’s final recovery may still be greater.

For this reason, when selecting a personal injury lawyer, it is important to consider:

  • whether the attorney has experience handling similar cases
  • whether they are willing to invest time and effort
  • whether they are prepared to take the case to court if needed
  • whether they clearly explain strategy and expectations

Most importantly, you should feel confident in your choice of attorney.

If you do not trust your lawyer, it does not matter whether the fee is 25%, 33%, or 40%. Choosing an experienced attorney who is committed to your case is often more important than comparing percentages alone.
