FBI Contacted You? 7 Things You Should Never Do

If the FBI Has Reached Out to You, Avoid These Costly Mistakes

Many people assume that if the FBI contacts them, they can simply explain the situation and clear up any misunderstanding. In reality, what you say—or do not say—can significantly impact your case.

Whether you are a witness, subject, or target of an investigation, here are seven things you should never do if the FBI contacts you.

1. Don't Assume You're Not Under Investigation

The FBI may contact individuals in many different capacities. Even if agents tell you they "just have a few questions," it does not necessarily mean you are not being investigated.

2. Don't Agree to an Interview Immediately

You are generally not required to participate in a voluntary interview on the spot. Politely decline and consult an attorney before speaking with investigators.

3. Don't Lie to Federal Agents

Providing false information to federal investigators can itself be a federal crime, even if you were not originally suspected of any wrongdoing.

4. Don't Destroy Documents or Evidence

Deleting emails, text messages, financial records, or other potential evidence can lead to serious obstruction allegations.

5. Don't Contact Other Potential Witnesses

Attempting to coordinate stories or discuss the investigation with others may create additional legal risks.

6. Don't Consent to Searches Without Legal Advice

If agents request access to your phone, computer, home, or business records, consult with an attorney before providing consent whenever possible.

7. Don't Face the FBI Alone

Federal investigations are complex. The earlier an experienced attorney becomes involved, the more options may be available to protect your rights.

What Should You Do Instead?

If the FBI contacts you:

✅ Stay calm
✅ Be respectful
✅ Request an attorney
✅ Preserve all documents and records
✅ Seek legal advice before answering questions

The Bottom Line

Being contacted by the FBI does not automatically mean you will be charged with a crime. However, the decisions you make in the first few hours or days can have a major impact on the outcome of the investigation.

If federal agents have contacted you, speaking with an attorney before responding may be one of the most important decisions you make.
